BHUBANESWAR: An official stated on Thursday that the Odisha Assembly has issued a notification for the speaker of the House to be elected on June 13 after BJD MLA SN Patro recently resigned from the position.

Patro resigned from his position on June 4, citing no reason. His son Biplab Patro, on the other hand, claimed that his father was suffering from kidney ailments and an eye infection. "Governor has been happy to appoint June 13, 2022 (Monday) at 10.30 am for election of the speaker," state assembly OSD-cum-secretary Dasharathi Satapathy said on Wednesday. In the notification, he stated that a meeting of all MLAs had been called for that day. Satapathy has asked all legislators to vote in the upcoming election.

The decision has been made. The BJD has yet to name a candidate for the position, but party sources say former minister BK Arukha could be nominated for the upcoming election. The poll will take place just days after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reformed the state cabinet on June 5, inducting 13 MLAs into the cabinet and appointing eight others as ministers of state (independent charge).

There are 12 new faces on the new council of ministers, including five women. The ruling BJD has 114 legislators in the House, compared to 22 for the BJP, nine for the Congress, one for the CPI (M), and one for the Independent.
