'Free Guy' climbs up to 2nd spot, 'Shang-Chi' rules for 3rd weekend

The superhero film 'Shang Chi,' starring Simu Liu, is expected to maintain its top spot with a gross of $20 million to $22 million, pushing its total profits to a remarkable $175 million to $177 million.

According to estimates, the Marvel superhero adventure picture grossed $5.8 million in 4,070 theaters on Friday. In its sixth week of release, the Ryan Reynolds starrer 'Free Guy' is projected to capture the number two spot.

Despite fresh releases, 'Free Guy' has held its own at the box office since its release, spending two weeks at No. 1 and remaining in the top five since then. Media reports that the sci-fi comedy grossed $1.3 million on Friday from 3,288 foreign theaters, and that it is expected to make another $4.9 million on Saturday for a total of $108.3 million.

Clint Eastwood's latest picture, 'Cry Macho,' is anticipated to launch in third place with $1.59 million from 3,967 theaters on Friday. With an anticipated three-day revenue of $3.47 million, 'Candyman' may finish fourth, bringing its total profits to $53 million in its fourth week. 'Malignant,' the next horror picture from James Wan, is expected to round out the top five this weekend. It is expected to generate $2.5 million this weekend, for a total of $9.6 million.
