Mumbai: In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old girl was raped and murdered in a girl's hostel in south Mumbai. Her body was found in the hostel room, with a scarf tied around her neck. The criminal security guard has committed suicide by jumping in front of the train. His body was found on the tracks near Charni Road station. The deceased student lived in Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel in Marine Drive area. Om Prakash Kanojia (30), who was working in the same hostel, first raped the student and then killed her. Kanojia had been working here for 15 years. The police became suspicious when the victim was wearing a scarf around her neck and the criminal security guard was missing from the hostel. 

The deceased student was the only child of her parents. She was a second-year polytechnic student. Police said the hostel mate last spoke to her at 11.30 pm on Monday. He asked the girl to come to his room – as she was alone on the fourth floor – but he said she would stay in his room. The police came to know at around 5 pm on June 6 that the criminal security guard was also missing. Ten minutes after committing the crime, he went to Charni Road station behind the hostel on Netaji Subhash Road and jumped from platform number one in front of the train coming from Churchgate. The criminal, a resident of Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot. However, a police officer said the culprit went and the bus lay on the tracks. 

After this incident, a police team was formed to catch the culprit. In this, a team was formed under the leadership of Additional Commissioner, South Region Dr. Abhinav Deshmukh, Senior Inspector of Marine Drive Nilesh Bagul. The detection team comprising PSI Rakesh Shinde, constables Lodhe, Thakur, Sangle and Korate took the criminal's body to GT Hospital for postmortem. His parents live in Colaba. Marine Drive police are interrogating him. "We received information that the body of a missing girl was found in the room. The room was locked from outside. A scarf was tied around the neck of the deceased. Police suspect that she was murdered after being raped. One of the workers had been absconding from the hostel since the incident. We are investigating the matter".
