IMPHAL: The Central government  and Manipur State government have determined to offer a compensation package  of Rs.10.00 lakh to those who died during the ethnic conflict in Manipur, officials said on Tuesday

The member of the family of those who died in the clashes will also be provided job opportunities. The compensation package will be equally borne by the Central government and the State government, officials added.

The decision was made during a late-night meeting on Monday between Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.It has also been decided to set up special telephone lines that will be used to put an end to rumour-mongering, which has significantly hampered efforts to defuse the situation and restore peace to the troubled State.

The meeting with Amit Shah also decided to make sure that necessities like petrol, LPG gas, rice and other food products will be made widely available to lower prices. The Home Minister, Amit Shah, arrived in Imphal late on Monday. He is accompanied by the Home Secretary, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Tapan Kumar Deka. On Tuesday, Amit Shah reahed Churachandpur, the location of some of the worst rioting earlier this month, where he will meet with political and civil society leaders from the Meitei and Kuki communities.

After a "Tribal Solidarity March" was arranged in the hill districts on May 3 to oppose the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, ethnic violence broke out in Manipur. Since then, there have been waves of unrest, the most recent of which resulted in at least five fatalities on Sunday.

Tension over the displacement of Kuki people from reserve forest area had caused a number of smaller agitations before to the violence. The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of the population of Manipur, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribal groups, who live in the hill districts.

Nearly 140 columns of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, comprising more than  10,000 personnel, in addition those from other paramilitary forces, had to be deployed to bring back normalcy in the northeastern State.
