New Delhi: Death sentence means hanging! In more than 50 countries of the world, there are laws to kill hardened criminals. They are given death as punishment for their crimes. Till now there is a provision for this in India too, but discussion has started on whether it will continue or not. In fact, in the year 2017, advocate Rishi Malhotra filed a petition before the Supreme Court. In which it was demanded that giving death sentence by hanging is very painful. In this, a person dies due to agony. Instead of this, some other simple way should be thought of to give death sentence.

Today, on Tuesday (May 2), this petition was heard in the apex court. Regarding this matter, the central government said in the court that it is considering constituting a committee of experts to consider other methods other than hanging the death row convicts. Advocate Rishi Malhotra has also suggested many ways on his petition to the government. He has urged less painful methods of capital punishment such as injection, shooting, electrocution or using the gas chamber.

A bench of Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Padriwala heard the petition. Attorney General R Venkataramani appeared before the court on behalf of the Central Government. He told that the government is considering to constitute a committee on this. He told that brainstorming is going on on which names will be included in the committee. He will be able to answer in this regard only after a few days. The top court also agreed in this and said that the process of constituting the committee is under discussion. Now the date of hearing will be fixed after the summer vacation.
