Hyderabad: On Saturday, polling began in the by-election for the Huzurabad Assembly constituency in Telangana, which was held amid tight security. Polling began at 7 a.m. in 306 polling centres across the Karimnagar district constituency. The voting will continue until 7 p.m., according to election officials. A little more than 2.37 lakh people are eligible to vote.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) made extensive preparations to ensure that voting was free and fair. As part of the elaborate security arrangements, Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Shashank Goel said 20 companies of central forces, as well as personnel from the state police, were deployed.

A total of 30 candidates are running in the bypolls, which were triggered by Eatala Rajender's resignation after Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao removed him from the State Cabinet following allegations of land grabbing.

Rajender joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after resigning from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the state Assembly (BJP). Rajender, who has been the Member of Parliament for Huzurabad since 2009, is running as a BJP candidate. He's up against TRS' Gellu Srinivas Yadav in an intriguing match.
