Guwahati: An IIT-Guwahati student was apprehended by police on Saturday following allegations that he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. The fourth-year student purportedly expressed his intention to join the terror group on a social media platform and via email before disappearing from the IIT-Guwahati campus.

Authorities later located him in Hajo, situated in Assam's Kamrup district. The student's arrest occurred four days after the capture of Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Farukhi, the alleged head of ISIS India, and his associate Anurag Singh, known as Rehan, in Dhubri district. They were arrested after crossing over from Bangladesh.

"Regarding the IIT Guwahati student pledging allegiance to ISIS - the individual has been detained while traveling, and further legal procedures will follow," stated Director-General of Police GP Singh. "After receiving an email, we initiated an investigation to verify its authenticity," stated a senior police official.

The email, sent by the student, indicated his intention to join ISIS. Upon contacting IIT-Guwahati authorities, it was revealed that the student had been missing since noon, with his mobile phone switched off. A search ensued, leading to the student's apprehension in the Hajo area, approximately 30 km from Guwahati, with the assistance of locals.

"Following preliminary questioning, the student was taken to the STF office. We are currently investigating the motive behind the email," added the senior police official. Assam's Special Task Force (STF) reported the discovery of a black flag, described as "similar to that of ISIS," and an Islamic manuscript in the student's hostel room.

"We are examining the seized items, and it is too early to draw conclusions. We are delving into the intent behind sending the email. While the student has provided some details, we cannot disclose further information at this time," stated the senior police official.
