Jammu and Kashmir declare no holiday on Sheikh Abdullah's anniversary and 'Shahid Divas'

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir administration has removed the birth anniversary of former CM Sheikh Abdullah and 'Shahid Divas' from the list of government holiday announced for next year. But 26 October which is celebrated as 'Merger Day' is given a place in the list. According to the list released late Friday by GL Sharma, Deputy Secretary, General Administration Department, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be celebrating 27 government holidays in 2020 which is one less than in 2019. This year 28 government holidays were declared.

Giving information in order, it is stated that 2 government holidays, 'Shahid Diwas' is celebrated on 13 July and Sheikh Abdullah's birth anniversary on 5 December, have been excluded from the list of holidays released for 2020. However, the list of these holidays includes the 'Merger day' celebrated on 26 October as a holiday for the following year.

Apart from these, there are 46 more holidays, including four from the Kashmir region, 3 provincial holidays of Jammu, 8 local holidays and 4 optional holidays. There were 47 such holidays in 2019. The then Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession on 26 October 1947, which was signed a day later by Lord Mountbatten, the then Governor General of India.
