Kolkata Police Files FIR Against 12 BJP MLAs for Alleged National Anthem Insult

Kolkata: BJP legislators, including Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, face FIR for allegedly insulting the national anthem on the West Bengal Assembly premises. In response, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul claims the FIR is lodged as they protested against the alleged malpractices of the Mamata government, accusing the Trinamool Congress of corruption and preventing discussions on crucial issues in the Assembly.

Agnimitra Paul accuses the TMC of hindering their attempts to address matters like corruption, violence, and rapes, claiming they were not allowed to speak on these issues inside the Assembly. She questions Mamata Banerjee's commitment to nationalism, referencing a past case where the Chief Minister faced charges related to the National Anthem in 2021.

It's noteworthy that in October 2023, a Mumbai court dismissed a complaint against Banerjee alleging disrespect for the national anthem, filed by BJP functionary Vivekanand Gupta. The court stated no offence against Banerjee was established.

The Kolkata Police filed the FIR against the BJP MLAs, including Suvendu Adhikari and Manoj Tigga, following a protest session where BJP legislators shouted slogans during a party rally attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee complained, alleging an insult to the national anthem, leading to the FIR.

The controversy unfolded when Trinamool Congress legislators, led by Mamata Banerjee, protested in the Assembly premises, focusing on non-payment of central dues under various schemes. The BJP legislators' counter-protest led to the allegations of national anthem disrespect, resulting in the FIR.
