New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, according to Union Minister Amit Shah. The new districts namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—are expected to significantly improve public service delivery and bring government initiatives closer to residents in these remote regions.

This development aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to advance Ladakh's growth and prosperity. Amit Shah emphasized that these new districts will strengthen governance and ensure that benefits reach the local communities more effectively. "In pursuit of PM Modi's vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create these new districts. This initiative aims to enhance governance and bring opportunities directly to the people of Ladakh," Shah stated on social media.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019 had previously restructured the state into two separate Union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, which has an Assembly, and Ladakh, which does not have a legislature. Following this reorganization, laws from the central government were applied to these territories, with the central government holding authority over law and order.

This announcement comes just before the scheduled assembly elections for Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first elections since the region's special status was revoked in 2019.
