The Akhil Bhartiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), the country's top decision-making body for the country's 13 recognized Hindu monastic orders, is expected to convene in the first week of October to elect a successor to Mahant Narendra Giri, the ABAP chairman, who died on September 20 allegedly by suicide.

On October 5, Mahant Narendra Giri's 16th-day death rite, or 'Shodashi,' would take place in his Baghambari Math. "The representatives of the 13 monastic orders have agreed that the ABAP meeting should take place shortly before the Mahant's 16th-day rites. The final date will be disclosed as soon as possible "remarked a Math senior seer.

Though ABAP's Prayagraj meetings have traditionally been conducted in Baghamabi Math, the next meeting may not be held there because most seers feel that no such event should be held there before Shodashi rites. The ABAP meeting might take place in Shri Panchayati Akhada's Manahirwani ashram in Daraganj or at Shri Panchayati Udaseen Akhada's grounds in Prayagraj's Kydganj.

Mahant Hari Giri, the general secretary of the ABAP and patron of Juna Akhada, verified this "A gathering of the ABAP is being planned ahead of Mahant Narendra Giri's 'Shodashi' rites. During it, many significant topics will be discussed." Soon after the successful Kumbh 2013 on the banks of the Sangam, Mahant Narendra Giri was elected to the office of ABAP president in 2014.

It was during his tenure as the Akhara Parishad chief that the Kumbh 2019 was held in a grand manner. Narendra Giri was re-elected to the post in October 2019 during a meeting held in Haridwar. Most saints now want a new ABAP chief to be elected on priority as preparations for Kumbh 2025 need to start at least 2-3 years in advance.
