MGR’s kidney donor MGC Leelavathy passes away

Chennai: MGC Leelavathi, the niece of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and matinee idol MG Ramachandran (MGR), has died in Chennai. She donated her kidney to him after he was taken to a Brooklyn hospital with renal failure. Leelavathi was 72 years old and leaves behind two daughters. MGR's elder brother, M.G. Chakrapani, is her father.

When MGR was shifted to the United States due to renal disease, Leelavathi, who was married to a medical practitioner Raveendranath, was living in Chelakkara in the Thrissur region of Kerala. She flew to Chennai and declared her desire to give her kidney to the Chief Minister, with the operation taking place in Brooklyn, New York.

MGR died in Chennai on December 24, 1987. MGC Rajendran, her brother, stated to reporters in Chennai on Friday: "Leelavathi was ill and had to go to the hospital, but her health improved and she was able to come home. Her condition, however, deteriorated once again, and she died on Thursday night." She has been a resident of Chennai since 1989. MGC Sukumar, her other brother, had appeared in a few films. MCR Praveen, the son of her brother Rajendran, joined the BJP, and she and her family met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi in 2017.
