Chennai:  A disturbing incident unfolded in Pakkirimaniyam village, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, on April 19th. A mob of Dravidra Munnetra Kazagham (DMK) workers reportedly attacked a woman named Gomathi for allegedly voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to reports, DMK supporters confronted Gomathi at her residence after discovering her allegiance to the BJP. The situation quickly escalated into a heated argument, culminating in a brutal assault on Gomathi. Witnesses claim to have heard the assailants asking, “Why didn’t you vote for our party?” Tragically, Gomathi succumbed to her injuries on the spot.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the police promptly arrived at the scene. Gomathi's body was transferred to Vrudhachalam Government Hospital for autopsy. Authorities are currently searching for seven suspects identified as Arul, Pandian, Arivumani, Ravi, Raja, Kalaimani, and Dharmaraj. In connection with Gomathi's murder, the police have already arrested three women.

The unfortunate incident occurred on the day Tamil Nadu went to polls in all 39 Lok Sabha constituencies. As the ruling DMK government faces stiff competition from the Annamalai-led BJP, this tragic event raises serious questions about the rising intolerance in the state.

The violent assault on Gomathi over her political choice raises concerns about the DMK's commitment to democratic values. The party's inability to tolerate differing political opinions is a worrying sign of increasing political intolerance in the state. Many are demanding accountability from the DMK government and urging authorities to ensure that those responsible for Gomathi's death are swiftly brought to justice.
