New Delhi: India's Home Ministry on Saturday invited non-Muslims like Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan and non-Muslims living in 13 districts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Punjab to apply for Citizenship of India. The Union Home Ministry has issued a notification for immediately implementing the order under the Rules framed under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and 2009 under the Law. The latest order does not relate to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) applicable in 2019.

Rules have not yet been framed by the government under CAA. When the CAA was enacted in 2019, there were widespread protests in different parts of the country and even riots took place in Delhi in early 2020 in view of these protests. According to CAA, non-Muslim oppressed minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan - Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians - will be granted Indian citizenship - who came to India till December 31, 2014.

Those who can apply for Citizenship of India are currently living in Morbi, Rajkot, Patan and Vadodara districts of Gujarat, Durg and Balodabazar in Chhattisgarh, Jalore, Udaipur, Pali, Barmer and Sirohi in Rajasthan, Faridabad in Haryana and Jalandhar in Punjab.
