New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is actively working to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with hopes of bringing the warring leaders—Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia's Vladimir Putin—to the negotiating table. On Tuesday, Modi spoke with Russian President Putin, just a day after conversing with U.S. President Joe Biden. These discussions follow Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine.

Several nations, including Ukraine, believe India could play a pivotal role in hosting a peace summit. Swiss Ambassador Ralf Heckner commended India for its "courageous diplomacy" aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has expressed support for India hosting the next Peace Summit. “I told Prime Minister Modi that we could have the Global Peace Summit in India. It's a big country, it's a great democracy—the largest one,” Zelenskyy stated, following Modi’s visit to Kyiv.

India has positioned itself as a leading figure among Global South nations. PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine and subsequent discussions with Putin and Biden have raised hopes for a potential breakthrough in peace negotiations. Direct talks between Putin and Zelenskyy are considered essential for resolving the ongoing conflict, now in its third year.

Modi Emphasizes Dialogue and Diplomacy

During his meeting with Zelenskyy, PM Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity, advocating for a resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi clarified that India supports peace rather than neutrality. Modi's Kyiv visit was preceded by a bilateral trip to Russia, where he met President Putin. Following the Ukraine visit, Modi spoke with President Biden about various global and regional issues, including the situation in Ukraine. Modi emphasized India’s support for a swift return to peace and stability.

Modi and Putin Discuss Strategic Partnership and Conflict

PM Modi reported on X that his conversation with Putin focused on strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They also discussed the Russia-Ukraine war, with Modi reiterating India's commitment to a peaceful resolution. This diplomatic push by Modi comes at a crucial juncture, as the Russia-Ukraine war persists with severe humanitarian and economic repercussions. The international community is increasingly concerned about the conflict's global impact.

Swiss Ambassador Ralf Heckner praised Modi’s diplomatic efforts, noting that India’s involvement in resolving the conflict would benefit not just Ukraine and Russia, but also Europe, the U.S., and the Global South. He highlighted Modi’s recent diplomatic engagements, which he believes will contribute positively to finding a peaceful resolution.
