New Delhi: During the nationwide lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus, there has been increased concern about the future. This is the reason that 1.03 lakh new members have been added to the national pension system (NPS) of the government's major retirement saving plan in the April-June quarter. In this way, there has been a 30 percent increase in NPS.

According to information provided by the Union Finance Ministry, about 1.03 lakh individual shareholders and 206 companies have been linked to the NPS in this period. Of these, 43 thousand people are connected through companies or their employers, while the rest have been personally involved in the scheme. With the addition of new members to the NPS, the number of corporate shareholders aged between 18 and 65 has reached 10.13 lakh. Let us tell you that over 68 lakh government employees are registered under NPS, while 22.60 lakh are from the private sector, in which 7,616 companies are registered.

These figures are also important because strict lockdown was in force in the country for nearly two months from 25 March. During this time, many people have lost their jobs in the private sector, or the salary has been cut. Even after this, people have insisted on saving for the future. Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) chairman Supratim Bandopadhyay said that NPS has been a huge success among corporate employees.
