This includes 20,000 tanks in storage and 10,000 that have been modernized since 2010.

To identify the countries with the most significant tank forces, we referred to the Combat Tank Fleet Strength by Country (2023) dataset from defense statistics website GlobalFirepower, which provides information on the militaries of 145 countries. Our ranking focuses on countries with a minimum of 1,000 tanks in service.

At present, Russia boasts the largest tank fleet, with an impressive arsenal of nearly 12,600 tanks. In contrast, Ukraine possesses a modest fleet of 1,890 tanks. Following closely behind Russia are North Korea, with 6,645 tanks, the United States with 5,500 tanks, and China with 4,950 tanks. It's worth noting that while the United States may not possess the most tanks, it holds the distinction of having the world's largest air force.

Although advanced battle tanks offer superior capabilities, the sheer number of older tanks, such as the T-72, still poses a significant threat due to their ability to inflict extensive damage through attrition. This was ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Iran boasts a tank force of 4,071, equipped with tanks like the Karrar, Zulfiqar MBT 3, and Mobarez. With an active-duty military personnel count of 575,000, Iran stands at the seventh position among the 145 countries examined. In terms of military spending, Iran allocated $24,589 billion in 2021, making it the 14th highest spender among the countries surveyed. As a percentage of GDP, Iran's military spending accounts for 2.3%, placing it at the 36th position.

India possesses a formidable tank force of 4,614, including tanks such as the T-72, T-90, and Arjun. With a substantial active-duty military personnel count of 1,450,000, India holds the second position among the 145 countries considered. In terms of military spending, India allocated $76,598 billion in 2021, securing the third position in terms of highest military expenditure. As a percentage of GDP, India's military spending represents 2.7%, placing it at the 30th position.

Egypt maintains a tank force of 4,664, featuring tanks like Ramses II, M1A1, and T-90MS. With an active-duty military personnel count of 440,000, Egypt ranks as the tenth largest among the 145 countries analyzed. In terms of military spending, Egypt allocated $5,165 billion in 2021, placing it at the 43rd position in terms of highest expenditure. As a percentage of GDP, Egypt's military spending represents 1.3%, ranking it at the 93rd position.

China possesses a tank force of 4,950, including tanks like the Type 99, Type 96, and Type 90. With a remarkable active-duty military personnel count of 2,000,000, China has the largest military force among the 145 countries examined. In terms of military spending, China allocated $293,352 billion in 2021, making it the second-highest spender. As a percentage of GDP, China's military spending represents 1.7%, ranking it at the 63rd position.

The United States maintains a tank force of 5,500, primarily relying on the M1 Abrams. With an active-duty military personnel count of 1,390,000, the United States secures the third position among the 145 countries considered. In terms of military spending, the United States allocated a staggering $800,672 billion in 2021, topping the list as the highest spender. As a percentage of GDP, the United States' military spending accounts for 3.5%, ranking it at the 15th position.

North Korea possesses an extensive tank force of 6,645, including tanks like the M2020 and Songun-915. With an active-duty military personnel count of 1,200,000, North Korea ranks as the fourth largest among the 145 countries analyzed.
