While criticising MP Abdul Khaleque for filing a FIR against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Bharatiya Janata Party argued that the Gorukhuti eviction effort was a responsibility carried out by the state government to realise the "ideal of an Atmanirbhar Assam."

"During the Assam agitation, indigenous people were killed in Gorukhuti, and Abdul Khaleque supporting encroachment by immigrants has proven the Congress's purpose against the indigenous people of the state," Assam BJP spokesperson Subash Dutta said in a statement.

The BJP further alleged Khaleque was involved in an international conspiracy to derail the government's attempts to rid Assam of encroachment. Congress MP Abdul Khaleque has filed a police complaint against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for allegedly making a provocative speech against Muslims at the Dispur police station.

Khaleque accused Chief Minister Sarma of giving a "communal colour to what was supposed to be an executive exercise" by referring to a part of Chief Minister Sarma's speech in Morigaon district on December 10, where he allegedly described the Gorukhuti eviction exercise as a "act of revenge" for the 1983 incidents.

In September, the Assam government carried out a large eviction effort against hundreds of Muslim households in Dhalpur, Gorkhuti, under the Sipajhar police station in Darrang district. Two people, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed in police firing during the eviction drive. In his complaint, Khaleque reportedly said that the eviction drive had seen “brutal killings” as well as homes being “burnt to the ground”.
