NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to preside over the 9th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog on Saturday, with a primary focus on the ambitious goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. The meeting will be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, according to an official release from the government think tank.

However, the meeting will see notable absences as several opposition leaders have decided to boycott the event. Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and the Aam Aadmi Party-led governments of Punjab and Delhi have all announced their decision to not attend.

In contrast, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has confirmed her attendance. She emphasized the importance of raising their voices on a common platform, indicating her commitment to participating in the discussions.

This year's meeting revolves around the theme 'Viksit Bharat@2047', which aims to chart out a pathway for India to achieve developed nation status by the centenary of its independence. The Governing Council will deliberate on the Approach Paper for the Vision Document on Viksit Bharat @2047.

The agenda for the meeting includes fostering participative governance and collaboration between the Centre and State Governments. The focus is on enhancing the quality of life for both rural and urban populations by improving the delivery mechanisms of government interventions.

Detailed discussions will take place on the role of states in realizing the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047. India's trajectory towards becoming the world's third-largest economy, with GDP already surpassing USD 5 trillion and aiming for a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047, will be a key topic.

Achieving the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047 requires a cooperative approach between the Centre and the states. The 9th Governing Council Meeting aims to develop a comprehensive roadmap to this end.

The council will also review the recommendations from the 3rd National Conference of Chief Secretaries, held from December 27-29, 2023. Key areas of focus included cyber security, the aspirational districts and blocks programme, the role of states, and the integration of AI in governance.

Prime Minister Modi, serving as the Chairperson of NITI Aayog, will be joined by Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors of States and Union Territories, Union Ministers as Ex-officio Members and Special Invitees, along with the Vice Chairman and members of NITI Aayog.
