In a somber turn of events, Burt Young, the renowned Oscar-nominated actor best known for his iconic portrayal of Paulie Pennino, the gruff and endearing best friend, corner-man, and brother-in-law to Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa in the legendary Rocky film series, has left us. Young peacefully departed this world on October 8 in Los Angeles, as confirmed by his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, in a statement to The New York Times. The cause of his passing remains undisclosed. Burt Young was 83 years old.

While Burt Young's extensive career encompassed notable appearances in acclaimed films and television series, including "Chinatown," "Once Upon a Time in America," and "The Sopranos," it was his enduring role as Paulie that etched his name into the annals of cinematic history. Standing as a compact, paunchy, and balding figure, Young possessed a remarkable ability to portray middle-aged characters, regardless of his true age.

Paulie Pennino first graced the screen in the 1976 classic, "Rocky." His character was introduced as an irate, foul-mouthed meat packer who often subjected his sister, Adrian (played by Talia Shire), to his abusive outbursts. The film marked a cultural phenomenon, leading the box office for the year and catapulting its star and writer, Sylvester Stallone, into stardom. Young's portrayal earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. "Rocky" secured ten Oscar nominations and won three, including the coveted Best Picture award. Although Young and his co-star Burgess Meredith were nominated, the Best Supporting Actor award went to Jason Robards for his role in "All the President's Men."

As the Rocky saga continued, Burt Young's character, Paulie, underwent a transformation of his own, paralleling the series' evolution. He evolved into a source of comic relief, most notably in the 1985 installment, "Rocky IV," where he ingeniously reprogrammed a robot gifted to him by Rocky into a sultry-voiced personal servant. Throughout the series, Paulie retained his identity as an eternal pessimist who persistently feared for Rocky's fate against formidable adversaries. His comical reactions to Rocky's resilience became a hallmark of the franchise, evoking laughter from audiences.

Reflecting on his memorable role, Burt Young shared in a 2020 interview with Celebrity Parents magazine, "It was a great ride, and it brought me to the audience in a great way. I made him a rough guy with a sensitivity. He's really a marshmallow even though he yells a lot."

Burt Young's life was marked by personal trials as well. He tragically lost his wife, Gloria, in 1974. He is survived by his daughter, one grandchild, and a brother, Robert. The legacy of Burt Young lives on through his unforgettable contributions to the world of cinema and his indelible mark on the hearts of his fans.
