Indian Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has received an order to supply intermediate cartridge bullets, ammunition to the United States. The OFB, country’s oldest defence establishments, has received an export order for 5.56X45 mm NATO M193 Ball bullets from the United States. The bullets will be manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Varangaon in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra.

In a tweet, “The OFB has received an export order to supply 5.56*45 mm NATO MI93 Ball ammunition to USA. The ammunition will be manufactured by Ordnance Factory Varasgaon and will be supplied in the current financial year.” announced OFB. The supply of ammunition is for the civilian market in the US, OFB sources said. In the backdrop of criticism on the quality of products coming out of OFB factories across India, export order was significant said a senior OFB official. OFB Deputy Director General Gagan Chaturvedi said that the ordnance factories have been exporting ammunition to foreign nations and have been fulfilling the commitments within the given time.

India had inherited 18 ordnance factories established by the British over the period of Independence. Currently, the OFB oversees 41 factories, 13 development centres and nine institutes of learning. Ordnance Factory Varangaon, Maharashtra  manufactures small arms ammunition for the Army, Navy and Air Force as well as various other units of the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was established in 1964, is one of the 41 ordnance factories in India. The federations of workers from 41 ordnance factories and allied units across India opposes the central government’s move to corporatise the OFB.
