NEW DELHI: After PM Modi announced a ban on plastic on August 15, several departments have come into action. The Lok Sabha Secretariat has also joined the move. The secretariat on Tuesday banned the use of plastic bottles and one-time use of plastic in the Parliament House complex. The Ministry of Railways and Human Resource Development have also banned its use.

The activism on the plastic used once has increased since Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, suggested a complete stoppage of its use. It also announced a nationwide campaign on October 2. However, there has already been a stir in the parliament and in different ministries of the government.

In a directive issued by the Lok Sabha, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has advised the officers and staff working in Parliament House to use eco-friendly bags or accessories instead of plastic items. Earlier, the Hrd A Department has imposed a total ban on one-time use of plastic in all Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas. There are about two thousand such schools across the country. With this, Union Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has asked other educational institutions across the country to take necessary steps to check its use. Plastics are considered to be more harmful to the environment.
