New Delhi: On the 100th anniversary of former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere's birth, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him, saying that the ideas of unity and equality that he preached are as vital today as they were then.

'Mwalimu Nyerere's life and work are a continuing source of inspiration for all of us,' Modi wrote on Twitter.  "His values of unity and equality are as relevant today as they were then." On the 100th anniversary of his birth, my homage to the great leader and friend of India," he added.

Nyerere, a Tanzanian anti-colonial leader, was born on April 13, 1922 and died on October 14, 1999. From 1964 to 1985, he was the president of Tanzania.

Notably, the United States Embassy in Tanzania honoured the centennial of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere's birth today by providing a historical display to the National Museum and House of Culture studying Nyerere's friendship with the 35th President of the United States.
