Padma Shri awardee Gandhian Shakuntala Chaudhary passed away

Guwahati: 102-year-old Gandhian Shakuntala Chaudhary, who was awarded the Padma Shri, has passed away tragically. People looking after her at the Sarania Ashram in Guwahati said she had been undergoing treatment for the past 10 years and died on Sunday night due to age-related ailments. She had been living in this ashram for decades. They said her body has been kept in the ashram for the last darshan and her last rites will be performed with full state honors at the Nabagriha crematorium on Monday.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the demise of Shakuntala Chaudhary and said that he will be remembered for her strong belief in Gandhian values. He tweeted, "Shakuntala Chaudhary ji will be remembered for her life-long efforts to promote Gandhian values. Her noble deeds at The Sarania Ashram had a positive impact on the lives of many. I am saddened by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and countless fans. Om Shanti. ' 

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also condoled her death and tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Gandhian and Padma Shri Shakuntala Chaudhary. Her life was devoted to selfless service, truth, simplicity, and non-violence at The Sarania Ashram, Guwahati, where Mahatma Gandhi lived in 1946. I pray for her prosperity. Om Shanti. '
