CHENNAI : After a policeman attached to the Coimbatore armed city force committed suicide, his friends and relatives blamed the online rummy game in which he was addicted to being the reason.

The 29-year-old Kalimuthu played online rummy games, incurring significant losses and debts, and borrowed more than Rs 20 lakh from people he knew, including friends and family. The policeman had agreed to pay back his creditors as soon as possible, but he was unable to do so by the deadline.

In an exhibition at Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, 32 government departments set up shop.  Kalimuthu was on duty as the police stall at the show displayed its weaponry. He shot himself in the abdomen on Friday afternoon while he was working alone and using an SLR gun from the display.

According to a senior police official with the Coimbatore city police, the bullet entered through the belly and exited through the back of the victim. When his coworkers arrived to the scene after hearing the gunshot, they discovered Kalimuthu lying in a pool of blood. They hurried him to a private hospital in Coimbatore, where surgeons performed the necessary procedures.

He lost his battle with his injuries early this morning due to renal damage caused by the gunshot. He did not react to treatment. Kalimuthu, a native of Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district, is survived by his wife Salai Thillanaikai and their two young children, ages four and three.
