Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday released Delhi University professor GN Saibaba and five others. They were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 for their Maoist links. The court pronounced its verdict on an appeal filed by GN Saibaba against the Gadchiroli sessions court's March 2017 verdict. GN Saibaba is 90 per cent physically challenged. He was convicted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Apart from Saibaba, 5 others were convicted in this case. He had also filed an appeal in the High Court. Among the criminals, Pandu Narote passed away recently, while Vijay Tirkey, Mahesh Tirkey, Hem Mishra, and Prashant Rahi have all been released. Saibaba was accused of staying in the city and working for Maoists. The Revolutionary Democratic Front is a faction of Maoists. These persons were accused of being members of this group. However, he himself has always denied the allegation of siding with the Maoists.

Saibaba is said to have always been an advocate of the interests of tribals. Since 1990, he has been campaigning in support of reservation. He was also caught in Operation Green Hunt launched by the Congress government in September 2009. Operation Green Hunt was launched to take control of the Maoists. Born in a poor family in Andhra Pradesh. N Saibaba is 90 per cent physically challenged. Before coming to Delhi in 2003, he did not even have the money to buy a wheelchair, but he was always very fast in his studies. Saibaba was a professor of English at Ram Lal College before he was arrested on May 9, 2014.
