CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, has predicted a below normal rainfall over Puducherry and Tamil Nadu for the next two weeks till December 8.

Weather models showed a drop in rainfall. Up to Tuesday, there was a potential of isolated light to moderate rainfall over the State, said S. Balachandran, Additional Director-General of Meteorology.

Due to the relatively low moisture content in the air, Chennai may encounter hazy conditions in the early morning hours for two days. He said that there were no significant weather systems in the Bay of Bengal that might have brought heavy rains to Tamil Nadu.

For the previous week, the northeast monsoon had slid into a break. The recent weather system was unable to offer the State widespread rain. Only 3 mm of rain fell in the State from November 17 to November 23 compared to an average of 34 mm, a deficiency of over 91%. He said,  22 districts recorded less rainfall than average, while a total of 16 districts had no rainfall at all.

The seasonal rainfall has decreased from an excess of 17% till November 17 to 1% as a result of the monsoon's poor performance during the past week. Tamil Nadu recorded 333.9 mml as of Friday, about 1% over the seasonal average of 330.4 mm between October 1 and November 25. Only nine districts including  Namakkal and Tirupattur, have received more rain than is typical for the season. The Chennai district received 9% more rain than usual.

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that a low-pressure region could form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea around the middle of the second week of December.  Only 9  districts, including Namakkal and Tirupattur, have received excess rainfall than their seasonal share. Chennai district registered 9 percent more rainfall than its average.
