Chandigarh: Punjab's AAP-led government on Sunday ordered an investigation into 720 private schools for allegedly hiking fees in defiance of government directives. After receiving complaints from parents alleging that these schools disobeyed government directives, the decision was made.

Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer announced the order for an investigation into schools on Twitter. "An investigation has been ordered into 720 private schools where parents have filed concerns. If proven guilty, strict action would be taken, said Hayer in a tweet.

Last month, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann issued an order prohibiting all private schools in the state from raising fees or forcing students to purchase books, uniforms, or stationery from certain stores.

Malwinder Singh Kang, the Punjab unit spokesperson for the Aam Aadmi Party, told the media on Sunday that the Mann-led government was committed to providing quality and cheap basic education in the state.

He went on to say that the education minister had initiated an investigation after parents complained that private schools were not adhering to government directives on tuition, book purchases, and uniforms. Kang stated that if any school is found guilty during the investigation, it will face severe consequences.
