Surat: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, will appeal his conviction and two-year jail sentence in a criminal defamation case on Monday in the Sessions court in Surat, Gujarat.

The leader of the Congress will petition the Sessions court today, and the party anticipates that the court will hear the case today. Rahul Gandhi is reportedly scheduled to show up to court at around three o'clock.

On March 23, Chief Judicial Magistrate H H Varma's court found the former Wayanad MP guilty of slander and sentenced him to two years in jail for his remark on the "Modi surname" in Karnataka in 2019.

Sources claim that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi will go to court with the former MP. Rahul Gandhi is expected  to be accompanied by Priyanka, the chief ministers of Himachal Pradesh (Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu), Rajasthan (Ashok Gehlot), Chhattisgarh (Bhupesh Baghel), and the Rajya Sabha (Abhishek Manu Singhvi). CLP leader Balasaheb Thorat and Maharashtra Congress chairman Nana Patole are also expected  to join the alliance.
The defamation case was registered against  Rahul Gandhi by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for saying "How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?"

Rahul Gandhi was found guilty in the case and was subsequently removed from the Lok Sabha as a result of the Surat court's ruling.

The Congress has vigorously opposed Rahul Gandhi's disqualification both inside and outside of Parliament. In response to the government's handling of the Rahul Gandhi and Adani controversy, Congress and other opposition parties staged a "black dress" protest. In an effort to demonstrate their solidarity, they had marched together from the Parliament building to Vijay Chowk.

A notice of eviction was also given to Rahul Gandhi by the Lok Sabha secretariat, and he declared that he would comply by the notification.

To plan their day's strategy, Congress MPs will gather at 10.30 am in the Congress Parliamentary Party headquarters. The party's lawmakers have been instructed to dress in all black throughout the meeting.

The Congress has been outspoken in protests around the nation following Rahul's exclusion from the Lok Sabha. Following Rahul's expulsion from the Lower House, the grand old party has been attempting to assemble like-minded Opposition players around it.
