Big move of Defense Ministry, now girls will be able to enroll in Sainik schools

New Delhi: The central government has taken another big step towards bringing women on par with men. The Ministry of Defense has now given the green signal for admission of girls in military schools. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has approved enrollment of girls in Sainik Schools from 2021-22. The Defense Minister has also directed the officials concerned to ensure the necessary infrastructure and availability of adequate women staff in these educational institutions.

This decision has been taken after the success of the pilot project launched by the Ministry of Defense for the enrollment of girls at Chingchip Sainik School in Mizoram two years ago. A statement from the ministry said, "This decision is in line with the government's goal of comprehensive inclusive, equal gender, support for wider participation of women in the armed forces and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao".  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the slogan of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. Chingchhip Sainik School in Mizoram set a new precedent.

Center told states, 'No compromise on the quality of mid-day meal'

Actually, on June 4, 2018, six girls were admitted to this Sainik School. It has become the first Sainik School in the country to admit girl students. Earlier Sainik School was known to boys only, but Chingchhip Sainik School set a new example for other Sainik Schools in the country.

The main objective of setting up these schools was to get students enrolled in the National Defense Academy by giving them proper education. The medium of instruction in Sainik School is English. These schools are run by the Board of Governors constituted by the Sainik School Society. The Defense Minister of the country is the chairman of this board and the chief minister of the states and the education minister are members of the board.
