Amritsar: On the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, unveiled its initial list of seven candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for June 1. These candidates will be contesting from various parliamentary constituencies across Punjab.

The lineup includes esteemed individuals such as former cabinet minister Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema, nominated for Gurdaspur, ex-MP Prem Singh Chandumajra for Anandpur Sahib, former MLA NK Sharma for Patiala, Anil Joshi, a former cabinet minister, for Amritsar, Bikramjit Singh Khalsa, a former MLA, for Fatehgarh Sahib, Rajwinder Singh (the grandson of former cabinet minister Gurdev Singh Badal) for the Faridkot reserve constituency, and former MLA Iqbal Singh Jhundan for Sangrur.

The decision to release their candidate list comes after the BJP's announcement on March 26 that it would contest all 13 parliamentary seats in Punjab independently, thus concluding negotiations with the SAD to re-establish their alliance before the Lok Sabha polls. Despite this, the SAD emphasized that principles outweighed political strategies for the 103-year-old party.

Sukhbir Singh Badal, the party president who emerged victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Ferozepur, declared that he would not be participating in the parliamentary elections this time. Notably, his wife and former Union minister, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, has not been named in the initial list. There is speculation that she might contest from either her current constituency, Bathinda, or Ferozepur.
