SAFF Champions India Surges Up the FIFA Rankings, Reaches 99th Position

New Delhi: The Indian men's football team won the SAFF Championship on Thursday, moving up one spot to 99th in the FIFA rankings for the first time since 2018.

In the semifinal and final penalties shootouts of the SAFF Championships in Bengaluru earlier this month, India defeated powerful teams Kuwait and Lebanon.

Kuwait went up four spots to stand at 137th in the most recent FIFA ranking, which was released on Thursday. Lebanon also advanced two spots to take the spot just below India at 100th.

Lebanon and Kuwait were asked to participate in the SAFF Championships to assure fierce competition.

India has 1208.69 points right now.

The 94th place FIFA ranking for India was earned in 1996. Additionally, the nation had previously ranked 99th in 1993 and 96th in 2017 and 2018. Last month, it was ranked 100th.

In general, Argentina, the defending champions, continued to lead, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Belgium.

Japan topped the Asian rankings at number 20, followed by Iran at number 22, Australia at number 27, Korea at number 28, and Saudi Arabia at number 54.
