Varanasi:  As many as 5,000 Lord Shiva devotees are estimated to visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, during the month of Shravan, according to the temple's public relations officer (PRO).

The holy month of "Sawan" (Shravan), which is regarded as the most fortunate month of the year, began today. For followers of Lord Shiva, who according to Hinduism is the Supreme Lord and the maker, defender, and destroyer of the universe, the month is of enormous significance.

Although there are always a lot of worshippers at the Vishwanath Temple, this month often sees a noticeable increase in the number of visitors. Typically, the crowd began to gather near the temple location and along the Ganges River bank.

Along with the Kanwariyas, it is expected that beginning on Monday, Lord Shiva's followers from North India, South India, and Western India would begin to show up. Most of the worshippers who showed up on the first day of Shravan month were happy.

The devotees keep fasts on Mondays throughout the month of Shravan because they are thought to be particularly auspicious days of the week. Every Monday of the year is a day for the devotion of Lord Shiva, but this month's Mondays are particularly important because the entire month is devoted to him. The event is primarily observed in North India.

Sawan this year began on July 14 and ends on August 12. During this time, July 18, July 25, August 1, and August 8 all fall on Mondays.
