Lucknow: Samajwadi Party MLA Rafiq Ansari from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by Barabanki police on Monday following a non-bailable warrant issued against him by the Allahabad High Court. Despite repeated notices, Ansari failed to appear in court, prompting the authorities to take action. The arrest came after the High Court dismissed Ansari's plea to quash criminal proceedings against him in a 1995 case, citing his consistent non-compliance with court summonses and warrants.

Ansari, who represents Meerut city for the second time on an SP ticket, faced legal trouble dating back to 1995 when charges were filed against him and 21 others in a case registered at Nauchandi police station. Despite numerous warrants issued over the years, Ansari never appeared in court for the proceedings. His legal team sought the dismissal of the case, arguing that the original accused had been acquitted, but the court upheld the proceedings, leading to his arrest in Barabanki.

The High Court's decision underscored the significance of adhering to judicial processes, especially for public officials like Ansari. Ignoring the warrants and allowing him to participate in legislative sessions could set a dangerous precedent. With Ansari's arrest, the legal saga surrounding the 1995 case takes a significant turn, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law in India's judicial system.
