New Delhi: Nearly three-and-a-half lakh employed teachers in Bihar have suffered a severe setback from the Supreme Court. The apex court has dismissed the review petition of the planned teachers. In fact, the top court has categorically refused to reconsider its May 10 decision. The Supreme Court has categorically stated that there is no mistake in the decision and hence the decision cannot be reconsidered. A 12 review petition was filed against the Supreme Court verdict.

It is worth mentioning here that there are about 3.7 lakh employed teachers working in Bihar. 70 per cent of the teachers' salary is funded by the central government and 30 per cent by the state government. Currently, employed teachers (trends) get a salary of Rs. 20-25 thousand. If the demand for equal pay is accepted for the same work, the salary will be Rs. 35-44 thousand.

The Centre, in support of the Bihar government, had protested against the demand for equal pay for equal work. The court had supported the stand of the Bihar government by the central government. A 36-page affidavit filed by the Central Government in the Supreme Court said that these employed teachers cannot be paid the same salary for equal work as they do not fall under the same pay category for the same work.
