CHENNAI: The government of Tamil Nadu has constituted multiple expert panels to offer a consolidated list of elephant corridors, including those that have been identified and the potential ones.

By the end of March 2023, the two expert committees would present a list of both current and potential elephant corridors, the government said the Madras High Court on Tuesday.

Two committees have been set up to locate elephant pathways in two different landscapes, one to the north and one to the south of Palakkad.

The divisions in the south include Pollachi, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Kodaikanal, Theni, Srivilliputtur, Megamalai, Tirunelveli, Kalakkad, Ambasamudram, and Kanniyakumari. The divisions in the north include Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Sathyamangalam, Hassanur, Hosur, and Dharmapuri forest divisions.

The Madras High Court had previously instructed the forest department to take into consideration acquiring the land of individuals who have lived there for a long time because these corridors may be utilised for the free movement of elephants.

The Tamil Nadu forest department has already informed the two forest departments of these two states about the elephant routes, which are dispersed throughout the forest divisions of Kerala and Karnataka. The forest departments in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka are dealing with a serious issue as a result of wild elephants invading human habitats.
