India's government will not buy COVID-19 shots from Pfizer/BioNtech and Moderna, as domestic production of more affordable and easy-to-store vaccines has jumped. According to sources, “the government will not buy vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. They are free to enter into a private tie-up after necessary regulatory approvals. But sovereign compensation is clearly something we cannot offer”. Both vaccines cost several times more than India's main shot, Covishield, the licensed version of the AstraZeneca drug.

India's monthly domestic production has tripled since April and will reach 300 million doses in October, according to Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who on Monday announced the resumption of India's vaccine exports from the October quarter. However, the government is expected to purchase locally filled and prepared doses of Johnson & Johnson's vaccine.
