Lucknow: In a tragic incident during a Muharram procession in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district, one person died and 13 others were injured after coming into contact with a live electric transmission wire. The incident occurred in Gardaha village when participants in the procession accidentally touched a 33,000-volt overhead cable with a 'tazia'.

Muharram processions, which commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, are held across the country by the Muslim community. During this particular procession, the contact with the high-voltage wire led to the immediate death of one individual, according to the police. Upon receiving news of the incident, a team from the local police station arrived promptly and transported the injured to a nearby medical facility. Subsequently, nine of the injured were referred to Shahjahanpur District Hospital for further treatment.

DSP Arun Kumar Singh of Lakhimpur Kheri Police commented on the incident, stating, "A 'tazia' touched a high voltage wire in the Mohammadi area, resulting in injuries to 13 people. All the injured were admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC). There is no issue with law and order at the site." A similar incident occurred in Bihar's Araria district, where at least 14 people were injured due to electrocution during a Muharram procession in the Pipra Bijwara area. The electrocution happened as the procession passed through an open field and a portion of the 'tazia' came into contact with a high-tension electric wire, according to the police.

These incidents underscore the dangers associated with high-voltage wires during public processions and the need for increased safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
