In the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, 15-year-old was allegdly gang-raped, murdered and tied to a tree. Superintendent of Police Salik Ram Verma said "The teenager reportedly went missing from her village on Friday. The post-mortem has confirmed that the girl was raped and later strangled".

Two men have been arrested and a manhunt is underway to track the third accused.

The Samajwadi Party, which is in power in Uttar Pradesh, and the Bhartiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre, have come under fire over this horrific crime as well as the overarching failure to protect Indian women against sexual violence.

Nirmala Samant, former member of the National Commission for Women said, “Yet another case, yet another victim, yet another girl. Always women and girls are at the deceiving end, be it Uttar Pradesh or any other state for that matter".

The events which led up to the rape and murder of the 15-year-old are not quite clear.
