LUCKNOW:: Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath government will soon add 352 Paediatrics Intensive Care Units (PICU) in 72 districts of the state to make certain best  health facilities for children.

According to the government spokesman, nearly 53. 8 lakh babies are born in the state every year.  Of these, 50.9 lakh survive beyond 5 years whereas 2.8 lakh babies fail to reach this age.

The state government hopes that by establishing these PICUs, it will be able to reduce the mortality rate of children under the age of five.

Currently, the state has 77 Sick Neonatal Care Units (SNCU) at district-level hospitals, 344 beds in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in 12 medical colleges, and 160 PICU beds in 16 district-level hospitals for children suffering from Acute Encephalitis (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE).
With this expansion, the state's total number of PICUs will rise to 512.

These PICUs are already being built and will be located in 88 government hospitals and medical institutions. These units are being built as part of the National Health Mission programme.  Each unit will include four beds, as well as modern amenities, technology, and ventilators.

Officials said that with this facility available at the district level, children up to the age of 12 will receive better treatment for major health diseases such as AES, JE, pneumonia, and so on.
