ROTTERDAM: The 11-year trophy drought for Spain is over. Croatia, led by veteran captain Luka Modric, has yet to win an international competition. Spain defeated Croatia in a dramatic penalty shootout after their tense Nations League final ended 0-0 on Sunday thanks to custodian Unai Simon's two saves. When the shootout was tied at 3-3, the Bilbao custodian saved a penalty by Lovro Majer with his feet before diving full-length to push Bruno Petkovic's attempt around the post.
With a "Panenka" chip, Dani Carvajal converted his penalty to clinch the match. In practise prior to the final, Spain's coach Luis De La Fuente noted that Carvajal had handled penalties well."He has a fantastic personality, and that's the way he decided to take it," the man stated. We have complete faith in his capacity to accept punishment. Spain's other championships came from the European Championships in 1964, 2008, and 2012 as well as the 2010 World Cup.
The midfielder Rodri, who celebrated by punching the air after converting his penalty, has won four championships this year after also helping his team, Manchester City, achieve a historic triple. To end his remarkable year, he was crowned the Nations League player of the competition.
It was not until the 84th minute of the game that Spain managed a shot on goal, and when replacement Ansu Fati finally appeared to be breaking the deadlock, Ivan Perisic was on the goal line to save him. In contrast to Croatia's five attempts, Spain only made one goal-bound attempt. When Majer broke through and was brought down in the penalty area by Nacho in the first round of extra time, German referee Felix Zwayer disallowed Croatia's requests for a penalty and determined that the Spain defender had played the ball.
