Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has asked the state government by when a decision will be taken on issuing licenses to motorcycle taxis. The court wondered why the Maharashtra administration had not thought about this till now. Actually, the bench was hearing a petition filed by bike taxi aggregator company Rapido. In the petition, the notification issued by the state government on December 29, 2022, has been challenged. Pursuant to this notification, the State Government refused to grant a license for a bike taxi to the petitioner.

A bench of Justices GS Patel and SG Digge said, "It seems that no one has thought about the benefits like reduction in traffic congestion and reduction in pollution by allowing bike rider system." We understand that bike taxis will be operated subject to certain safety requirements that must be adhered to. But there is hardly any reason to dismiss the whole proposal in this way.

The court expressed- Outside Mumbai and in fact even in the northern suburbs of Mumbai, two-wheeler transport is by far the norm and a matter of great convenience. We do not see any reason why the government should not seriously consider the proposal." The government had said that the state has no policy on licensing bike taxis and also no fare structure policy for bike taxis. However, the bench asked the state to consider the benefits of two-wheeler transport. The bench also questioned why a temporary arrangement cannot be made till the final policy is made. The court said- We understand that for policy-making the state government may need some time to come up with this. But it is certainly not completely out of the question. The court gave some time to the state to inform when it would take a final decision regarding bike taxi aggregators.
