Agartala: After 16 years, a man named Ranjit Ghosh has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment by the court for torturing and killing his wife in Haripur area of Rishimukh block of Belonia subdivision of Tripura. He was also fined Rs 10,000. The trial court had passed the order after hearing the testimony of 26 people.

According to sources, Ghosh was allegedly torturing his wife. Tired of his torture, his wife Bipula Majumdar Ghosh committed suicide by consuming poison on 1 March 2005. Later a case was registered by the victim's brother at Belonia police station. In which it is said that Ghosh used to torture Bipula mentally and physically for money. Ranjit Ghosh was absconding since 2007.

He surrendered before the court on Friday. The Belonia District Tripura and Sessions Judge Court on Friday sentenced Ranjit Ghosh to seven years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. 10,000 after hearing the testimony of 26 people. Along with this, there is also a rigorous imprisonment of three months under section 304 (b) of the Indian Penal Code.
