Smuggler was hiding 4.5 lakh gold in his mouth, caught at Bangalore airport

Bangalore: Customs officials at Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) in Karnataka's capital Bengaluru have detained a 42-year-old gold smuggler who was trying to hide gold in his mouth. Airport sources said in this regard on Thursday. The accused, a resident of Chennai, landed at Bengaluru airport from Dubai on Wednesday evening. He had hidden two pieces of 100 grams of gold worth Rs 4.5 lakh in his mouth.

When the Air Intelligence Unit at Bengaluru Customs stopped the accused and questioned him. So they found that the accused was having trouble talking and opened his mouth from which gold pieces were found. Officials have registered a case against him for evading customs duty. Officials also recovered 15 gold pieces weighing more than 1 kg worth Rs 49.6 lakh in the private flight he travelled. Officials are investigating whether the same man left these gold pieces on board.

The flight had reached Bengaluru from Dubai on Wednesday. The accused had told the authorities that he had gone to Dubai from Chennai on October 14. The customs department has registered a case for further investigation to break the smuggling network.
