Mumbai: When a 62-year-old Dahisar pensioner attempted to buy liquor worth Rs 2,220 online, he lost Rs 3.45 lakh to a cyber fraudster. The accused had persuaded the senior citizen to sign up for the online order and payment option and then defrauded him of his hard-earned cash. While no arrests have been made, the fraudster has been charged with cheating and impersonation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

According to police sources, the sexagenarian wanted to order Antiquity Blue whiskey and used a local search engine to find the website's name, which led him to a website where he found a phone number. When the complainant called the number, a man named Raj introduced himself as an employee, and the complainant then placed an order for two 750 ml bottles worth Rs 2,220.

Raj asked the complainant to register on the site and wire Rs 49,001 to complete the process. When the complainant demanded an explanation, he was promised that the funds would be returned. The accused then instructed the sexagenarian to wire Rs 98,001 in order to receive free home delivery, but Raj informed him that the transaction had been declined and instructed him to make two more transactions.
