Guwahati: The Assam government on Thursday announced that it will deposit 3,000 rupees in the bank account of about 8 lakh tea plantation workers by November 15. Assembly elections are proposed in April-May next year in the state. The state government had deposited Rs 2,500 in the bank accounts of tea garden workers in the years 2017-18 and 2018-2019 under the scheme but it was stopped in the last financial year. Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said, "The scheme was not implemented in 2019-20 but will be completed in 2020-21. The scheme aims to reach 8 lakh workers. ''

He further said that the amount of the scheme will be increased to three thousand rupees in the accounts and the work will be completed by 15th November. Sarma has further said that construction of 120 new secondary schools in tea plantation areas has started and the classes are expected to start in April next year. He has also said that the Swami Vivekananda Yuva Sashaktikaran Yojana, announced in 2017-18, has not been very successful due to lack of help from banks but has been re-readerized in view of the cooperation in making youth entrepreneurs.

Earlier, the scheme was run under the Department of Industry and Commerce, but now the Finance Ministry is going to implement it. According to the scheme, the government will give an amount of Rs 50,000 to each of the members of registered NGOs, agricultural produce institutions or self help groups before September 1.
