Debate on Kashmir issue intensifies in Parliament, Congress offers 'stop work' proposal

NEW DELHI: Congress is attacking the Modi government over US President Donald Trump's statement on the Kashmir issue. In the wake of Trump's statement, Congress has moved a 'stop work' motion in the Lok Sabha. The Congress says PM Modi should respond to the issue by his own.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has responded to Section 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. In a written reply, the Home Ministry said that enforcement of Section 370  in Jammu and Kashmir is temporary.

India has flatly rejected US President Donald Trump's claim on the Kashmir issue. The External Affairs Ministry has said that PM Narendra Modi has not made any such request to the US President. Not only that, there is no mention of Kashmir in the White House's official statement. During his meeting with Pakistan's PM Imran Khan, the US President had offered mediation on the Kashmir issue.

Special autonomy has been granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Section 370 of the Constitution of India. When Maharaja Hari Singh of the Prince of Jammu and Kashmir was merging the state into the Indian Republic, he signed a document called 'Instrument of Expression'. Section 370 belongs to the same. The provisions were framed by Sheikh Abdullah, who was then appointed prime minister of the state by Hari Singh and the then Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru.
