Dalit woman in Chittoor AP alleges torture in police custody

Anhdra Pradesh: On Saturday, a Dalit woman in Chittoor, Anhdra Pradesh claimed that she was tortured by police while being held in custody for questioning on theft charges.

Umamaheswari worked as a maidservant in the home of Chittoor sub-jail superintendent Venugopal Reddy for one year, according to the victim.She was arrested after Rs 2 lakh in cash was discovered missing from the officers' home.

She was released after being beaten black and blue with third degree methods, resulting in her loss of consciousness. Her husband and mother escorted her from the police station to the government hospital, where she was admitted and discharged the following day at the police's request. She demanded an investigation and retribution against those who tortured her.

Meanwhile, TDP state spokesperson Sapthagiri Prasad condemned the police officers' brutal act and demanded action against those responsible. However, Chittoor DSP Sudhakar Reddy denied any torture or use of third degree methods. He stated,  that she was taken to the station for questioning and later released. Meanwhile, Anantapur Range DIG S Senthil Kumar has tasked Chittoor ASP D N Mahesh with conducting an investigation into the matter.
