Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir (J-K) Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah expressed confidence on Tuesday that the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance will achieve success in the upcoming assembly elections. Abdullah indicated that the party's manifesto will address key issues, including resuming talks with Pakistan if elected.

"Sab manifesto mein hai..." (everything is in the manifesto), Abdullah responded when asked about the alliance's potential push for dialogue with Pakistan. He added, "This time, people are in a very good mood. The National Conference and Congress will have a very good (performance), and we will achieve success." The election manifesto of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has promised efforts to restore Articles 370 and 35A, pursue diplomatic initiatives with Pakistan, and ensure the dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley.

Tariq Hameed Karra, President of the Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), emphasized that the unity between Congress and NC is focused on alleviating the people’s suffering rather than just electoral numbers. "It is visible how tense the BJP is with this unity (INDIA alliance)," Karra said. National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah highlighted their strategic approach, stating, "Today is the last day to file nominations for the first phase. We have given our manifesto and roadmap. We have decided on a seat-sharing agreement with Congress and aim to present a united front against the BJP to increase our chances of success."

According to the seat-sharing pact, the NC will contest 51 of the 90 seats, Congress will contest 32, and the two parties will have a "friendly contest" on five seats. Each party has allocated one seat to CPI(M) and the Panthers Party. The National Conference has announced its list of 18 candidates, while Congress has released its first list of nine candidates. The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 4. The Union Territory has 88.06 lakh electors.
