Chennai: The heavy rains that wreaked havoc on Chennai residents have now moved to Kanyakumari in South Tamil Nadu. Rains have been falling across Tamil Nadu's southern districts, including Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Theni, and Ramanathapuram, since Wednesday and are expected to continue through Friday. The district collector has declared school holidays as a result of the severe rains that have been falling since Thursday. Colleges have also been shuttered. Water has inundated several portions of the district, with water entering homes in numerous low-lying regions.

Many portions of the district had an average rainfall of 77.2 mm, with eight spots receiving more than 100 mm rains in the 24 hours leading up to Friday 8 a.m., according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The dams at Mambalathurayar, Poigai, and Mukkadal are still overflowing. Because of the constant rains in the catchment areas, the water level in four other reservoirs is also rising. Surulacode had the most rain (150 mm), followed by Kannimar (136.88 mm), and Perunchani (134.88 mm) (129.8mm). Water levels of over 100mm were also observed at four other meteorological stations. Eight residences in Vilavancode Taluk and one each in Thovalai and Tiruvattur Taluks were partially destroyed by heavy rains. Mullaperiyar Dam's water level continues to rise, reaching 138.95 feet on Friday morning.
